Allan Gray Orbis

Nnete Malebo, Eunice’s
headgirl, has been awarded the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation
Scholarship which will cover her entire studies at UCT. Her
brother who was headboy at Saint Andrew’s, was also an Allan
Gray Fellow. This year he won another scholarship which
allowed him to spend two weeks at the White House and two at
the World Bank. But Nnete got to go to the World Cup Final!
Perhaps the real congratulations should go to Mr & Mrs
Malebo. Mr Chris Thomas of St Andrew’s and I were guests of
Allan Gray at the Royal Marang Hotel ( where the England
World Cup team stayed) in Rustenburg recently where we
shared ideas on excellence in education with the principals
of Allan Gray’s Circle of Excellence schools.
Eunice honours a lifetime's service to
quality teaching

Dr Donald Menelaus Paine,
affectionately referred to as ‘Dr P’ and ‘Don’ by scholars &
staff, was born in East London in 1945. There he attended
Selborne Primary School and Selborne College. Thereafter he
attended Rhodes University in Grahamstown, where he
completed a BSc in Natural Sciences and a BEd(Hons). He
married Mary Matthews in 1972 and had two daughters,
Stephanie & Katie. Don & Mary later moved to Bloemfontein so
that their daughters could pursue careers in ballet & music.
After teaching at St Michael’s School for a number of years,
he moved to Eunice where has remained to this day. Today,
Stephanie (a lawyer) lives in Pretoria with Don’s two
grandsons Liam and Kent, while Katie (a medical doctor) has
a private practice in Bloemfontein where she is happily
married and has two children (Luke & Leila). During the past
10-15 years Dr Paine has also lectured Biology/Life Science
didactics at the UFS, from which he has recruited a number
of teachers into Eunice. Training teachers within the school
and university contexts is his way of putting some of his
expertise back into the next generation. His favourite
pastimes at home are working on things mechanical and
looking after his grandchildren. In 2002, Dr Paine was
awarded the SATU (South African Teachers’ Union) Gold Award
for conscientious and diligent service to the teaching
profession- a fitting tribute to a lifetime spent in a noble
profession. |
Bloemfontein's
Children's Choir

The Children’s choir activities always
start with a choir camp in January to welcome all the new
members.The
Bloemfontein Childrens choir joined Andre Rieu
on his South African tour. We had 9 performances in Sun City
, Durban and Cape Town. En route from Durbun to Cape Town we
stopped over in Bloemfontein for one night and had a concert
with Chris Chameleon.
In May we performed at the Dutch
Reformed Church Centenary festival in Theunissen, a week
later we were part of the Primary School Universitas 40
years festival. In June we did the “Praise the Lord” concert
in the Universitas Church. We opened the Volksblad
Arts
festival with Chris van Niekerk(Francios from 7de
Laan). On the 7th of June 30 Children wipped off
to Belgium to perform with Andre Rieu in Maastricht. We had
several TV, Radio and Newspaper coverages. We appear in the
DVD “My African Dream” that will be released in October.
On
our return we performed with the Southern-Cape Childrens
choir. Our Annual concert is in September and thereafter we
will be part of the Macufe Festival.
Let's Celebrate
the Eunice Ethos

Over the last 28 years Eunice has
strived to give its new campus alongside Grey College the
character of a school which has served many generations
since 1875. It wasn’t an easy move from town especially for
old girls, but so many Eunice stalwarts have worked hard to
develop our buildings and grounds into a quality school
complex which adds much needed style, character and
refinement to Jock Meiring Street!

Accounting Olympiad

This year on the dreaded
Friday the 13th of August, 8 Grade 12 girls and 2 Grade 11
girls wrote the Accounting Olympiad Exam. The lighthearted
jokes and nervous giggles soon turned into focus and
concentration.
50 learners were chosen to write the second round of the
competition and only 6 from the free State. Two of these are
from Eunice; Carla Venter ( 86 % ) and Desi Nikolov ( 80 %
).
The next round will take place on 27 August.
Chess 2010

Eunice Chess had an
eventful year. We entered three teams to play the leagues
which were played at Eunice this year. We participated in
the Waterkloof Open for the first time and the girls did us
proud. Eunice came second in the National Girls’ School
Festival in Stellenbosch with Lechelle Badenhorst the only
unbeaten player of the festival. Anjurie de Wet came second
in the SA Ladies Open and Anita Neethling came first in the
SA Ladies Candidate section. We are hosting SA Top Schools
Chess during the first weekend of the September holidays.
Anjurie made the Free State U/ 18 A team and Lechelle
Badenhorst the Free State U/18 B team. |
Mrs B article

Eunice’s musical Nunsense
II directed by Dr Niel van Niekerk played to capacity
audiences. Elretha Britz, vollksblad reviewer described the
schoolgirl leads as brilliant in a show of professional
quality. Dr Niel van Niekerk’s “Come Mxit with me on
Facebook you Twit” was a ‘closed’ show in that it included
only the Gr 11 Dramatic Art class.. A classic opportunity
for about 30 girls to work in a real theatre with their
teacher who is primarily a respected and prolific director,
with musical genius Anton Esterhuyse and with sound and
lights expert Corné Stapelberg. The show was largely
original as it explored relationships, especially between
teenager and parents, using technology as its context.

It is with pride and appreciation that Eunice acknowledges
grants totaling R 700 000 from Anglo American’s Epoch and
Optima Trusts for the furtherance of excellence in
Mathematics in 2009 and 2010.
Anglo chief Executive Cynthia Carroll explains that “ while
more children have educational opportunities than was once
the case, the country’s poor maths and science results may
be the single most constraining factor on long term growth
prospects”, Anglo’s approach seeks to reward educational
centres of excellence which produce quality and which can
increase access and participation in mathematics.
In the 2009 Matric Exam our Mathematics matrics achieved a
100 % pass with a 78 % average. There were 155 candidates,
87 of whom took Mathematics. There were 45 As; 23 Bs; 18Cs.
15 of our As were Black girls.
The grant is spent on staffing extra Maths tutor Classes, a
mathematics computer network, interactive white boards,
Maths Camp transport and the promotion of Maths Paper 3 and
Advanced Programme Mathematics.
